Bookish Beauty 2016 Makeup Awards

Happy New Years Bookish Babes! Last year I really enjoyed doing my first Bookish Beauty awards and I wanted to continue them for 2016. This year I’ve split the makeup awards up into face products and eye/lip products, let’s get started!

FACE

Face Primer – BECCA Backlight Priming Filter

I received this sample in a Sephora Play box and ended up falling in love with it. I didn’t expect this to work well with my oily skin, but was pleasantly surprised when it looked beautiful under my foundation! I make sure to concentrate this on the outer perimeter of my face and on my cheekbones. This way I avoid my most oily areas and the primer gives me a healthy glow.

Foundation – TARTE Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15

My husband gifted me this last Christmas (2015) and I honestly didn’t love it when I first tried it out. However, during the past fall/winter season this foundation has been perfect for me! This foundation gives me a great skin like finish while being very light on the skin. The mousse texture makes this very easy to blend out and gives medium to high coverage. I wouldn’t use this during the summer months as my oily skin combined with Texas heat makes it break up too easily on me. Colder weather allows this to last all day on me with minimal touching up, in fact I recently used this every day on a trip to Las Vegas and it held up extremely well for running around all day/night.

Concealer – IT COSMETICS Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealer

As a pale skinned gal I have had the hardest time finding a good concealer that works well for covering blemishes and brightening the under eye area. The formula of this is quite thick, but warming it up with my fingers makes blending very easy. Due to this being highly pigmented a little bit goes a very long way. I’ve been using this like crazy for the past several months and I still have over half the product to go, which makes the $24 price tag worth it for me.

Powder – MAYBELLINE Fit Me Matte + Poreless Powder

This is a returning product from last year’s awards and as you can tell I have used this product to death. I’ve repurchased this a few times this past year and find it works great to set my foundation and keep me matte, especially during the summer. I will say that the ‘translucent’ shade of this is ever so slightly dark on my skin, but I think only my picky eyes can tell. I am looking to try a new powder this year, so if you have any suggestions please let me know!

Bronzer – PHYSICIANS FORMULA Butter Bronzer Murumuru Butter Bronzer

I bought this after seeing fellow pale gals RAVE about it all over YouTube and Instagram and I must say it completely lived up to the hype! When using a light hand this gives a great subtle bronze to the cheeks and a bit of healthy glow (but no shimmer/glitter).

Blush – Tarte Double Duty Beauty Day/Night Eye and Cheek pallette in Classic Courage

This is the first Tarte Blush I’ve ever tried and I must say I really love it! I don’t think this color comes in the individual blush compacts and it looks like this palette isn’t available anymore…bummer dude. The nude tone of this cheek color suits my fair skin perfectly and warms it up in the perfect way without looking orangey.

Highlighter – NYX COSMETICS Illuminator in Ritualistic

This is not a subtle highlighter by any means unless you put the absolute minimal amount on. I love to use this on days where I want it to be known that I am wearing highlighter, definitely not for minimal makeup days (at least not for me). The gold tone of this works well with my fair/cool toned skin, which is hard for me to find. I also love using this as a brow bone highlight!

EYES/LIPS

Eye Primer – LORAC Behind the Scenes Eye Primer

I received this primer with my Lorac Pro Palette and really didn’t like it at first. After running out of my old faithful e.l.f. eye primer I decided to give this one a try as my go to primer. I’ve learned that you only need a very small amount per eye for this to work, put on too much and it will crease INSTANTLY. Once I figured that out I actually quite liked this.

Individual Eye Shadow – MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Shadow Eyeshadow and Powder Blush in Pink Granite

This was another item I received in a Sephora Play box, it’s been a great investment! I love using this eye shadow as an all over lid color on days I want to wear makeup but don’t want to spend a ton of time on my eyes. The taupey shade isn’t exactly a nude but goes with almost every outfit I wear.

Shadow Stick – Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Rose Gold

Another Sephora Play item! I told you that box was worth it. This shadow stick is perfect all by itself or as an extra luminous base for shimmer shadow. You do need to be careful when applying not to open your eyes all the way until it has completely set which takes a minute or two. After this product has set it is pretty darn budge proof.

Eye Shadow Palette – TARTE Tartelette Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette

I treated myself to this palette for my birthday this year and I have absolutely fallen in love with it! Most of my wardrobe leans cool toned and I think similarly hued makeup suits my fair skin. I have found ways to use every single shadow in this palette on a regular basis and have certainly gotten my money’s worth out of it. The shadow are pigmented, but not so much so that they can’t be sheered out for more subtle looks. The matte black in this is fantastically dark and works great for dark smokey looks or as liner. These shadows blend out easily and all of the color go well together, which makes putting looks together a breeze.

Pencil Eye Liner – ESSENCE Gel Eye Pencil Waterproof

I picked this up hoping it would work great in my water line and it definitely fills that purpose well. It does transfer from upper water line to lower waterline, however not so much so that it disappears from the upper water line. This isn’t sharp enough for regular lid liner though in my opinion, being an automatic pencil can’t control how precise the tip gets.

Liquid Liner – Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

When I received this in my Sephora Play box I was ecstatic! My shaky hands don’t play well with liquid liner, however I find it much easier when they are in pen form. This is quite easy to use, even with my unsteady hands. I’m able to make a thin line and get a nice wing without too much difficulty. My biggest complaint with this product is that when my eyes get a bit watery it comes off when I touch my eyes. If you have any recommendations for budge proof liquid liners in pen form please let me know!

Mascara – URBAN DECAY COSMETICS Perversion Mascara

This is my last Sephora Play item, I swear! If you want a false lash look without the hassle of glue I recommend trying this out. This does a fantastic job at separating while mega volumizing the lashes. Flaking is non existent with this product and it lasts really well while still being easy to take off at the end of the day with some cleansing oil.

Brows – ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS Dipbrow Pomade

Another item I treated myself to for my birthday and I’m so glad I did! It took a little bit of practice to not use too much product in my brows and to get the clean the shape I wanted. This stuff lasts FOREVER and has yet to dry out on me, I’ve been careful to not leave it open too long. I will definitely be repurchasing this when it runs out.

Brow Gel – NYX COSMETICS Control Freak Eyebrow Gel

If you’re looking for a good hold without the crunchy feel I think this stuff is a great budget option. Seeing as brow gels get dirty pretty quickly after running them through the product in your brows I don’t like to spend a lot of money on them.

Lipstick – E.L.F. COSMETICS Matte Lip Color in Natural

This lipstick is a fabulous your lips but better color that lasts well throughout the day and fades gracefully. At only $3 you can’t go wrong with these matte lip colors that won’t dry out your lips.

Liquid Lipstick – STILA Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina

Patina is such a hyped color in the Stila liquid lipstick line and I totally understand why. This color and formula are beautiful on the lips without being drying. This lasts well all day and layers decently over itself, however it can get a bit crumbly on the inner part of your lips if you lick them too much. I definitely plan on picking up more of these colors, let me know if you have any favorites!

That completes the 2016 Bookish Beauty Makeup Awards! Let me know what your favorite products were this year, I’m always looking for awesome stuff to add to my collection!

    1. I totally get that! It took me a while to get the hang of it and sometimes its too heavy for me when I want to do more minimal makeup. I want to find something lighter that’s still a good shade match for me and has good coverage. Have you had any luck?

      1. Well yes I have. Here’s a review I did on my new must have under eye concealer. I have a decent amount of under eye lines, as I’m 57, but this concealer is amazing. I recommend trying on a color at Ulta or elsewhere, then buying it on Ebay. I paid full price for my first tube, which I purchased in July and use daily. I still have half the tube left. I got my second tube for $7.50 on Ebay. I had a 20% off coupon for Ulta, and I ended up taking the concealer back after I found it on Ebay. https://cornfedcontessa.com/2016/12/17/hope-for-everywhere-concealer-by-philosphy-review/
