Happy June everyone!! Despite the fact that it is getting unbearably hot here in Texas I’m excited for June because it’s my birthday month! I will definitely be treating myself to some makeup and book goodies here soon, so keep an eye out for a post about it.
Shall we chat about the life update first?? You may or may not have noticed that I haven’t been posting on the blog or Instagram for the past couple of months. I’ve honestly been a bit unmotivated to participate in my hobbies lately due to a lot of stress going on. I feel like I’m finally over this slump and am excited to get back into things. With that said I’ve actually started a fun new project! (Don’t worry I won’t be abandoning blogging.) Some of you may know that I am a big movie and TV show person and absolutely love discussing story lines, writing, directing, etc. To feed this passion of mine my husband and I have actually started a YouTube channel around these topics! We’ll be reviewing movies, TV shows, games (both the video and board variety), and books (mostly book to movie adaptations). We’re still really new at this so there’s a lot of learning happening, but we’ll get better with more high quality content over time! I would absolutely love if you guys checked out our first video and subscribe to our channel if this sounds intriguing to you!
Alright, so now that the life update is taken care of let’s talk about the books I read in May!
I decided to listen to this on audio book after hearing some buzz around it in the past (it’s been on my TBR for a couple of years now). I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more if I had a better understanding of Greek philosophy. We learn at the very beginning that someone is murdered and then spend the next almost 600 pages waiting to learn the whole story. Despite this being well written and keeping me intrigued enough to not DNF it I still found it quite boring. I just never really connected to any of the characters and felt kinda meh about the whole thing even through the climax of the story.
This is the second Colleen Hoover book I’ve read and I definitely think she’s going to be a hit or miss author for me. I really wanted to like these characters but they were so flat, especially the MC. She had no backbone and let everyone around her make decisions for her. Also, I never want to read “I want to be inside you” again…my goodness some variation of this phrase is said SO many times in this and it came across as SOOO creepy, not sexy at all. Plus during one of the sex scenes the guy keeps making her tell him how much he deserves her?!?!? No. This was a 3-4 star for me until about halfway through and then it just got cringey.
Oh how I love Neil Gaiman. His works are so strange and the way he writes books is just incredibly interesting and original to me. I wanted to read this before watching the new TV show. I enjoyed this a lot, but also found it confusing for most of the story. The fact that the MC never reacted strongly to the WEIRDEST shit bothered me so much. He comes across as a bit flat, but the show so far (2 eps in) gives him a lot more personality. If you like Gaiman’s work I definitely think you will love this.
WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO READ THIS?!?!? I remember hearing a lot of buzz around this when it came out last September but for some reason I thought it was a feminist memoir?? Which I usually really enjoy, but this one wasn’t calling me. I had no idea this was going to be an excellent thriller. I LOVE all of these characters, Alex is such an awesome kick ass lady with so much depth that I wasn’t expecting. The way female friendships were portrayed in this was really refreshing to me. Go read it immediately!
That wraps up May! What did you read this past month? I would love to chat about it!
